Stephen Hawking Warns That Artificial Intelligence Will Replace Humans

08 Noviembre 2017

According to Stephen Hawking, the risk is real - certainly more so than that of a "Planet of the Apes" style scenario.

"AI could develop a will of its own, a will that is in conflict with ours and which could destroy us".

Hawking, who is considered to be the most famous genius of the modern age, now says that AI could be the worst thing for human civilisation if we don't find a way to control its development.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently said that AI could cause a third world war, and even proposed that humans must merge with machines in order to remain relevant in the future.

"We need to take learning beyond a theoretical discussion of how AI should be, and take action to make sure we plan for how it can be", said Hawking, who communicates via a cheek muscle linked to a sensor and computerised voice system. It all started with the invention of the stocking frame and it's been downhill since then.

Hawking, a self-described optimist, also said A.I. could also be helpful to humans.

"You all have the potential to push the boundaries of what is accepted, or expected, and to think big".

"Unless we learn how to prepare for, and avoid, the potential risks, AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization". It brings dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many.

Professor Hawking said that he hoped that tiny spaceships propelled by beams of light could reach Alpha Centauri within his audience's lifetime.

Addressing the crowd of engineers and tech workers at the "vanguard" of AI development, Hawking warned they needed to focus on maximising benefits for society rather than pure capability. "We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change". Specifically, we should be keeping an eye on autonomous automobiles and sex robots.

As popular media has quickly picked up, every time a new intelligent software or program is released it inevitably begins to malfunction. "I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth". High profile speakers including United Nations Secretary General Antonito Guterres and European Union's commissioner for Competition Margarethe Vestager also took the stage on Monday and joined calls for an ethical approach that reduces inequality.
