Louisville puts Pitino, AD Jurich on leave amid scandal

28 Setiembre 2017

Pitino was under contract at Louisville through the 2025-26 season after he signed an extension in 2015.

Two recruits who had committed to the University of Louisville basketball program announced Wednesday they are decommiting and reopening their recruitment following the announcement that head coach Rick Pitino is on unpaid administrative leave and may not return to the program.

During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Louisville president Greg Postel said that Jurich and Pitino have not been fired, but have been placed on leave.

Pitino, 65, was named the John Wooden National Coach of the Year at Providence in 1987 and was inducted into the Nasimith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

Director of global sports marketing at Adidas, Jim Gatto, was among those arrested, and he's accused of helping funnel approximately $100,000 to the family of an "All-American high school basketball player" to secure the prospect's commitment to a school Adidas sponsors. The former Kentucky coach seemed like a slam dunk to be the Commonwealth's replacement for the legendary Denny Crum.

Keatts and N.C. State were not implicated in the investigation.

Keatts, who met the media on Tuesday, declined to answer any questions about Pitino or the FBI investigation, which ensnared 10 schools and led to the arrest of four assistant coaches and an executive for the sneaker company adidas. In total, the deal was worth $50.93 million in guaranteed salary, and featured several bonuses on top of that. Louisville was, and remains, on probation. And the advertisers. And the shoe companies.

The complaint repeatedly cites a cooperating witness, someone who has been working with federal investigators since 2014.

"We are going to reopen it", Ramey's father, Terrell Ramey, told Evan Daniels of "If true, I agree with the U.S. Attorney's Office that these third-party schemes, initiated by a few bad actors, operated to commit a fraud on the impacted universities and their basketball programs, including the University of Louisville".

The Shakespearean tragedy of Pitino's life - which included the death of an infant son, the death of his brother-in-law in the attacks of 9/11 and now an embarrassing end to a celebrated coaching career - filled McMackin's thoughts.

Rick Pitino was head coach at Kentucky from 1989 through 1997, posting a record of 219-50.

Ramey is a 6-3, 177-pound point guard rated by as the 26th-best prospect in the Class of 2018 and by Rivals as the No. 39 player nationally.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to (Pitino)", Keatts said.

So while the ACC ponders its festering Louisville problem - the conference recidivism champions since joining the league - the rest of college basketball will be pondering just where the FBI's hammer will fall next. "We learned of these charges this morning and of course will support the ongoing criminal federal investigation".
